It has been my philosophy that when you are undecided about what you should do or what path you should take, you should sit down and decide what is important to you, what your life goals are and then move in that direction. Of course taking it to the Lord in prayer is also a good idea. Usually, we want God to drop the answer on our head, and sometimes He does, but more often, praying about it.. saying the words out loud, helps us to put things in perspective.
Sometimes just moving in the direction of a goal, makes it clear that we are exactly on the right path, sometimes we get sidetracked onto something better or more suitable, sometimes that road makes it very clear that we are on the wrong path. But you never know until you start down that path.
I don’t believe that rushing headlong, whole hog, into every idea that strikes your fancy is the best way to proceed, either. Just move in that direction. Everybody changes, priorities change, circumstances change. It’s kind of like dating… you don’t marry every person that you date.. you date to see how you fit together, what your differences are, how well you get along, etc. The further you get down that path the more you know if it’s right or not. And the more people you date, the better idea you have about what type of person is right for you.
I think the same thing about education. If you never go to college because you can’t decide which courses to take or you don’t want to take the “wrong” courses, you’re wasting time.. Start down the path and the way will become clear. Most kids change their major at least once. It’s because as they’ve gone down the path of education, they’ve had their eyes opened to more and different opportunities. If they had never started, they still wouldn’t know.
I am a firm believer that education is NEVER wasted. Even if you were educated in a field that you don’t pursue, the knowledge and wisdom that were gained are not lost. It’s a part of who you are and your life experience.
I don’t believe it’s ever too late to start on a new path. I think its sad when people get to middle age and say, “I wish I had become a teacher.”, or “I wish I knew more about world politics.” It’s not too late! Just move in that direction! Who knows what you’ll find along the way.
One of my dreams is to learn to speak Spanish. I have neither the time nor the resources to pursue that.. so each week I meet with Evelia.. I help her learn English and in the process, she teaches me Spanish. Just moving in a direction…
